Ciao Italia
Well, I've been in Italy (again) for the past week.
I donàt like Italy that much anymore. If it wasn't for the food I would actually think Italy would be a waste of time.
Went to Florence this weekend, and I've realized one thing. Tourism-based cities loathe turists. I don't like them either, especially when they are american or english, as they tend to be patronising gits when they come out of "civilization" and travel around Europe. But I'm a tourist as well, ain't I? In Italy I don't see myself as one, maybe because Italian and Portuguese cultures are so alike.
That's why as well, I can recognize this kind of rude treatment towards tourists. We see it in the Algarve very frequently - "let's take advantage of these bastards" - they don't speak the language and have plenty of money to spend.
In Florence, a waiter at a cafe we went to, referring to my friend Julie, said to one of his colleagues, "Has this one payed for her coffee?" - This one. This one? I was so f**king outraged by that treatment, that I had an argument with the waiter. He had thought we didn't understand Italian and was very apologetic, but nevertheless, I felt so angry, cos I was getting that kind of disrespectful and antipatic treatment during the whole day.
So Florence, instead of the beautiful artistic city every one loves and talks about, became the symbol of the touristic city I don't to go back to. Venice will probably be the same.
Anyway, we're going back to London tomorrow. Can't wait.

I'm glad to see that it wasn't just me then. I had the same experience in that part of Italy -- Florence and Pisa. 9 out of 10 people I had any interaction with were pointedly aggressive.
I went to Pisa and was walking down a pedestrianised street, minding my own business, and a woman in her twenties came over and started shouting "YOU! ENGLISH! GERMAN! HOLLAND!". I was wearing sunglasses so was able to walk past completely ignoring her. I had a a lot of other instances of nasty people -- it was a very stressful week as a result.
Even in the airport on the way home, I had my tray of food/drink in the cafeteria, was queueing at the till before paying then going to sit down and eat, and the woman on the till started screaming at me. What the hell for, I have no idea. When I eventually got past I said out loud "Thank god I only have to spend one more hour in this fucking nasty country". After I ate/drank I went outside of the airport and found a grassy spot in the spring sunshine and just bathed in the sense of relief that was washing over me due to my imminent departure.
I've spent a lot of time abroad all over Europe and North America and I've never ever ever had anything like this happen to me ever before! I'm usually fortunate enough to meet many wonderful people on my trips away. Certainly I've never been anywhere where I've been even remotely subjected to such naked aggression and hostility as this. I have Italian friends in London, and I puzzle over what was the matter in Italy that time. I put it down to bad luck, but I'd be pretty damn reluctant to go to northern Italy again.
Jeez, I can feel my blood pressure rising just thinking about that horrible trip to Italy!
